KB: How to link Component Folder and Component Type
Solution Details
For an Altium 365 Workspace (Pro or Enterprise Subscription Level) or an Enterprise Server Workspace, the link between a Component Type and a default Component Folder is defined in an associated Component Template. If an association is not defined, component creation may fail because the folder path is not specified.
Component Templates play a pivotal role in managing and organizing components effectively in a workspace. By linking the Component Type to the Component Folder through an associated Component Template, users can tailor the organization of components to match their specific requirements. This flexibility allows for a more streamlined and customized approach to component management.
Defining a default Component Folder for a Component Type:
1. Create a Component Type within the Preferences.
2. Navigate to the Explorer Panel and check whether an appropriate default Component Folder exists. If not, create a new folder as required.
3. Develop a new Component Template, specifying both a default Component Type and a default Component Folder.
4. Release the Component Template to the server.
5. Return to the Preferences and confirm that the Default Folder and Template assignments for the Component Type are correctly updated.
An Altium 365 Workspace with Standard Subscription Level does not support Component Templates. When Altium Designer is connected, adding a Component Type in Preferences automatically creates a corresponding Component Folder in the workspace. This folder is linked to the Component Type and shares the same name.
