KB: DXF Import Shows 'Done' but No Data Appears

Altium Designer Altium Designer
When importing a DXF file into Altium Designer, the process completes successfully with a “Done” message and no errors, yet no drawing data appears. This issue is typically caused by the selected drawing space option during import.

Solution Details

DXF Import Appears Successful but No Data Is Visible

Users may encounter a situation where the DXF import reports success but no graphical data is imported into the design.

Drawing Space Selection Can Prevent Data Import

This behavior often results from the drawing space option being set to Paper during import. Paper space data in DXF/DWG files is scaled for page layout and may not contain actual drawing elements. If the source file lacks Paper space data, the import will complete without errors but yield no visible content.

Switch to Model Space for Successful Import

  • Change the drawing space option from Paper to Model in the DXF import dialog.
  • Model space typically contains the actual design data and is more reliable for importing graphical content.

How to Change the Drawing Space Option in Altium Designer

1. Open the Import from AutoCAD (DXF/DWG) dialog.
2. Locate the Drawing option.
3. Select Model instead of Paper.
4. Proceed with the import and verify that the drawing data appears.
